Why give to Shakespeare in the Woods?

SitW produces explicitly queer and socially conscious, cutting-edge work in a small, rural state - there's nothing like us for miles!

When you donate, you're not only supporting SitW and our artists, but a thriving, diverse regional arts scene, which results in a more vibrant, equitable, and stronger community overall. We ask individual donors like you to consider the widespread, lasting impact of your fiscal gift when you give generously and vigorously today.

From now through May 31st, SitW is raising $5,000 in grassroots funding, that will go towards realizing our high caliber, innovative 2026 productions of LEAR and MERRY WIVES.

What Impact Does Your Donation Have?

Your support is essential to our work and platform for underrepresented artists of all identities to create urgent, revelatory work, and also ensure that our work remains accessible to all through a sliding scale ticket model

Access to art is proven to have a direct positive effect on health and wellbeing, and its economic impact is also proven to be significant. Where there is investment in the arts, there is investment in community with widespread impact.

Your donation also enables us to pay our artists increasingly equitable rates, that reflect a core value of seeing artists as any other career worker deserving a living wage.

Building a professional theatre company in a state outside of our major industry hubs means many traditional pathways of funding are unavailable to us, though our production budgets are increasingly comparable to leading non-profit theatres in NYC, Washington DC, and Chicago. In a state like New York, understandably, there are multiple government grant and funding opportunities at city and state levels, as well as foundations and institutions, for non-profit theatres. This is not the case (yet) in Vermont, which means SitW doesn’t have access to these significant traditional funding resources. We see what happens in states across the country that invest in more arts funding (from MA to WY to CA to MN)- when there is healthy government fiscal support in a region, its arts institutions thrive alongside its community.

As we work to be a key voice pushing for change within Vermont arts funding, SitW relies more heavily on robust, sustained contributions from individual donors who champion our work and uplift the arts.
